And another big name to the list of residents of Aspen. Lance Armstrong is now an Aspenite! He spent the better part of June training for the Tour De France – which he currently sits in 3rd place. 3rd place, after 3 1/2 years of retirement, pretty impressive! So next time your on your bike headed up independence pass and someone blows by you, it’s probably Lance. Hopefully we’ll see him a bunch this winter – I wonder if he’s a snowboarder or a skier? If you’re in any one of the aspen ski shops check what equipment he gets.

It won’t be long now, winter is less than 5 months away! Plenty of time left to get into shape so that on the first big powder day of the season you can be out there from 1st chair till final sweep! It’s also a chance to try out some demos and other aspen ski rentals! They’ll have fat skis, skinny skis, long ones, short ones, curvy ones. Enough to keep you busy all season, plus you’ll need to check out snowmass ski shops and see what they’ve got. Remember, not all shops carry the same equipment!

I got to thinking today about how quickly skis have progressed in their shape and style in the last couple years! Incredible! I can remember about 10 years ago Atomic and Salomon first started adding some shape to their skis and the trend never really picked up – then about 4 years ago the shape ski explosion happened, everything was shaped and the sidecut kept getting larger and larger, some of the skis now are just ridiculous. These skis are idiot proof. Which, is pretty sweet! Why not make a really fun activity easier, just means you can do it longer! You can walk into any one of the many Aspen Ski Shops and find hugely cut skis and rip up the mountain!
If you look back all the thanks can go to snowboards – they started the shape revolution! As much as skiers dislike most snowboarders, we owe a lot to them, and yes it pains me to say this! Without snowboarding we would all still look like 1979 Austrian skiers with our sweet shoulder padded one-pieces. Snowboarding not only brought some style, (and for freestyle skiing, too much style) but function as well. Skiing allowed for snowboarding to make us look and ski better!

The weather here in Maine is less than desirable – especially knowing how nice it is in CO! I heard on the radio this morning that 20 out of the last 29 days have had measurable accumulation. It’s beginning to drown out the grass. Every day I check the reports for Aspen/Snowmass and as usual it’s gorgeous with the occasional chance of afternoon thunderstorms, which is typical. Those thunderstorms tend to hang primarily to the mountains and will usually drop some snow up high. Too bad you can’t find aspen ski rentals, although I guess if you have your own all the better. I just keeping thinking how much snow Maine would be getting if it was winter.

Although the lifts may be closed the skiing isn’t necessarily! Now that Independance pass is back open for the summer we have the ability to make some turns. Just get a friend and take turns skiing and driving the “lift” (your car)! Last year we were able to make turns into the beginning of July! Remember though – just because you can drive to it doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t worry about avalanche danger. Generally if you can be off the slope by 10am you are much safer but always check with CAIC. Some shops may still have ski rental aspen. Have fun – nothing like summer turns!

It’s almost the end of winter and you find your self with a week off from work, school, whatever you happen to be doing. Where should you go, what should you do? My vote is ski!! Aspen and Snowmass are well known for their incredible March weather. Blue bird days, big decks and patios with endlessly flowing beverages – what more can you ask for? Aspen ski rentals of course, or to get you out and about on the hill. Even if you are visiting a local aspen ski shop just to get the equipment so that you can ski or ride to a deck for beverages is fine – that is what March and spring break is all about!

Now that airlines are starting to charge extra for ski equipment it’s nice to know that advanced skiers can get high performance demos from a local Aspen ski shop. I used a ski rental delivery shop to get the Rossignol Phantom 80. I had read a lot about the ski and was excited to be able to try it out. The shop delivered the skis right to my room and did the binding adjustment while I waited. At 9:00 am I was standing in line with the locals since I had already taken care of my equipment the night before. The reviews I read for the Phantoms were right on! They were ready for everything I had to throw at them. I especially liked them on the packed powder, they were quick edge to edge but the 80 mm of width under foot blasted through the deeper snow. They also hold very well on groomers because of their vertical sidewalls. Tomorrow I’m going to try a different pair of high performance demos, but they’re going to have a lot to live up to after a day like today!

In these tough times we are facing (economically speaking) it is important that we not only watch our finances closely but that we make the most of every penny! Let’s face it, we as Americans, still need our vacations. And most of us are going to take them, we’ll be a bit smarter about where we go and how we spend the money but we are going to get away for a bit. For most of us in the winter months this means a ski vacation. So how can we make the most of our dollar – well here’s something to think of. Have you ever wondered how much of your time you are wasting getting ski rentals? At the price of tickets these days it’s quite a bit of money. Say you have 5 people in your family – each of you paying $90+ a day for a lift ticket, now think back to the last time you were in a rental shop, how long did you wait 1/2 hr, 1hr, 1 1/2? Let’s say it takes the family an hour to get fitted. There are roughly 7 hours you can ski in a day, now you have six. You have effectively lost 5 hours of skiing (1 hr/person) That’s roughly $65 dollars you have wasted – not to mention any ski time you lose returning the gear. Want a solution? Try an aspen ski shop that delivers! They will deliver till late at night or first thing in the morning, before many other shops open – oh and the big thing, no waiting in line, they are only there for you!

What a great weekend. I was able to stop by Aspen Snowmass area and check out the crazyness that is the X-Games! I made quite a day of it too. Since most of the big events didn’t start till after 4 I was able to get out and do some skiing beforehand. I got my equipment from a great local Aspen Ski Shop and hit the slopes! The skiing was great – snow was falling the entire time I was there which meant the skiing just got better! It made for a cool X- Games as well. There were a lot of suprises in who won what and especially when Levi Lavallee did a double back flip on a 400 lb+ snowmobile! Tons of people, tons of good snow, lots of great tricks and flips! I look forward to the games next year and getting great aspen ski rentals!

At Aspen there is a way to tell what type of skier you are. It is important in the ski school so you can be grouped with the right people. There is a system set up into 9 different levels. Three of them are green, which will guide you through the basics and get you set to advance to a green blue level which is also a 4 or 5 on the scale. By level six it is determined that you are an intermediate and are pretty comfortable with blue ski terrain. Level 7 is where you push yourself into a black and blue skier beginning to hit the steeps. By 8 and 9 you are developing very well and are just looking for those small minute critiques, that will get you to be really good and love all the terrain. So get those skis together and give the best Aspen Ski Shop a call to advance your skiing ability!
