Fastest women in the world!

by admin on November 4, 2009

Aspen will once again host the Winternational, the women’s world cup.  It all starts on Nov 28th and no they probably won’t be racing on local aspen ski rentals from local aspen ski shops.  These are finely tuned athletes on finely tuned equipment.  Traditionally Aspen has gotten it’s first big dump of snow during the weekend of racing.  I know the last three years we have gotten from 2 – 4 feet every year.  The athletes love it because they get fresh tracks on one of the greatest mountains in the west.  I can’t wait, not only to see these women haul butt down Ajax mountain and to ski in some fresh powder!

Snow, snow and more snow! Last week was a complete whiteout. It snowed off and on from Tuesday to Friday. The front range of Colorado seemed to get more snow than Aspen Snowmass. Which is normal for this time of year, once El Nino or La nina, which ever it is kicks in those systems get pushed to dump all their snow right over the high rockies. And we reap the benefits. So what you going to ski this year? It won’t be too long before we are skiing in Aspen, they are already skiing in Loveland and some of the front range mountains. I would get into an aspen ski shop and take a look at what is available. When the season opens you can also always head back in and get some aspen ski rentals to try stuff.

We have had a couple Indian Summers so far this fall. One week it was snowing everywhere, including in town, this past week was beautiful and in the mid 60′s. I guess that weather pattern is an Aspen signature. I heard someone say out of 365 days, 300 are sunny. The past couple years though we have had more snowy days -which is fine with me I got good use out of my aspen ski rental equipment. This winter is looking to be another good snow season. I am a huge fan of skiing on blue-bird days but I am also a fan of skiing in snowstorms, where everytime you ski a run you can’t see your tracks from before. There is buzz about the upcoming ski season coming out of every aspen ski shop, just stop and listen in. It’s going to be a good year.

In the age of safety conscientiousness, with seat-belt laws, bicycle helmet laws, gps tracking for our kids, it is a no brainier (sorry about the pun) that you should wear a helmet while skiing. Snow may seem soft when its falling, but it’s not when you are falling, and neither are trees for that matter. Helmets come in all shapes, sizes and colors, there is one out there to fit you well. You can also always pick one up at a local aspen ski shop, or ask for them when you get your aspen ski rentals. It is quick, easy, inexpensive and they are much warmer than a hat. Don’t worry about sticking out on the trail, the majority of people wear them now, in fact you may look funny if you’re not wearing one.

Above 12000 covered in snow!

by admin on September 21, 2009

Well the last couple days have seen storms rolling in around 3 o clock and while down in the town of Aspen it has been rain up above 12,000 feet it has been snow. Now I realize it is too high up and too thin to ski but it gets you excited about a the winter to come! Sept 21st and we have accumulated snow – fantastic. Cruising around town, both in Aspen and Snowmass you can see the local aspen ski rentals shops starting to pull in the bikes and get the skis out. In another week or so we will be into fall and will be seeing snow more and more often, especially in Snowmass where it sits higher up than Aspen.

Hiking by Lost Man Lake – and it SNOWED!

by admin on September 12, 2009

Yes, Yes and Yes! Snow, Snow and Snow! As we were heading back down from the saddle above Lost Man Lake, which is just before Independence Pass outside of Aspen, clouds in the distance moved closer and started spitting snow and wind – which quickly turned into more of a snow shower. It was awesome, yes it was cold but that’s what winter is all about. It won’t be long before we are all visiting the local aspen ski shops for new or used equipment to get out there and enjoy what winter brings! See you there.

Looking to kill 12 hours this weekend?

by admin on September 8, 2009

If you are in need of something to do for 12 hours look no further than to Snowmass. This saturday is the 12 hour Mtn Bike race. Benefiting two local non-profits; Aspen Youth Center, a drop-in youth center offering a variety of summer, after school and outreach programs for youth grades 4-12. And Extreme Sports Camp, which provides summer camp experiences for youth with autism. Do the race solo or with up to 8 team members. Basically who over completes the most laps on the course in 12 hours is the winner. Just seems incredibly ridiculous right? Well I guess it is but it supports two amazing programs and that makes it totally sane and worthwhile to wreck your body. Run in to a local aspen ski shop and get a bike and sign up!

Get on your bike and ride for a good cause this weekend. Choose from 100, 50, 30 or 10 mile routes. All supporting Breast Cancer research, prevention and awareness. The routes begin up in snowmass village and travel through Aspen, Woody Creek and Old Snowmass. Not only is it a good cause but the scenery is unreal. There is still time to raise the $500 dollars to ride. Stop in to a local aspen ski shop for a bike rental and get out there.

Crazy Crazy Bikers

by admin on August 11, 2009

Some of the craziest bunch of animals I have ever seen! Screaming down Snowmass Mountain as fast as they can, over rocks, roots, washouts and over dirt and wooden ramps. Blast the Mass was this past weekend at snowmass. Featuring bike racing from cross-country to Down Hill. The later being the more burly for sure. We positioned ourselves at a few different spots to watch the races, we made our way to the bottom of the waterfall (no actual water involved, most likely named that as most people tumble down it as water would) to watch the Pro division. This steep technical section is made even more difficult by the fact that you are riding on loose gravel, down a 35 – 40 degree pitch with big boulders and roots and a 90 degree turn at the bottom. Crazy! They definitely were not doing it on a bike they rented at a local aspen ski shop.

Is it ski season yet?

by admin on August 4, 2009

I’m getting antsy. I keep catching glimpses of ski movies on RSN and Plum TV, I try to close my eyes while flipping by those channels but I don’t always remember. Shot over shot of guys and gals getting sick lines in deep, deep powder! I cannot wait to get out there and try some new fat skis. I hope we have a great snow year! We usually do here in Colorado! There will be lines outside all the local aspen ski shops when the snow starts to fly.
